"Did you know that agriculture is one of Florida's top three sources of
revenue? All those oranges, don't you know. (And you thought the economy
would collapse without Disney World). From citrus to sugar, the Sunshine
State's land yields a lot of produce. To get all the facts, point
your browser to the University of Florida's Institute of Agricultural
Sciences and discover why Florida ranks 8th in the nation for farming
productivity. IFAS is the king of outreach programs, it has offices in
all 67 counties and does research on the Everglades and bugs, too. We
also liked the National Food Safety Database, which teaches readers ways
to prevent illnesses spread through food (can you say 'salmonella?').
Top-notch interactive maps lead you through a geographic array of beans,
cabbage, carrots, tomatoes,... whew!

| HERP LINK'S HERPETOLOGICAL RESOURCES SITE OF THE WEEK
FOR THE WEEK OF MAR. 31 - APRIL 6, 1996
I'll be the first to admit that this week's Hip Herp Site is like none that
has been presented here before. AgriGator - "The American Alligator" is actually part of the University of
Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences Computer Network.
The Institute is located in Gainesville, Florida (aka: Gator Heaven).
Although this site is unlike any of the Previous Hip Herp Sites, it is
still worthy of your patronage. This is probably the most comprehensive
site on the Web dedicated exclusively to the American Alligator. The table
of contents for this site include: Alligator History , Alligator
Reproduction , and Living with Alligators to name but a few of the many
topics included in this document. Visit Gator Country ... if you dare!

area entitled "The Funny Farm." AgriGator refers to its sub-areas as
bayous, swamps and islands. Users with graphical browsers get some great

AgriGator, compiled by the University of Florida's Institute of Food and
Agricultural Sciences, is a far-reaching list of links to agricultural
sites. Arranged by topic, the list ranges from the Malaysian Ministry of
Agriculture's page to Florida's own "Alternative Methods for Mole Cricket
Control." (Agricultural science in Florida seems mainly devoted to keeping
large, unattractive insects from eating all your crops.) AgriGator also
provides some advice and help for university departments working on their
own Web pages, including the "Funny Farm" -- stressbusting sites for
overworked academics.

| GLOBAL AGRIBUSINESS INFORMATION NETWORK
FLORIDA AGRICULTURAL INFORMATION RETRIEVAL SYSTEM (FAIRS) & AGRIGATOR
These two University of Florida sites deserve special mention. Three
years ago these were among the first sites to provide comprehensive
agricultural information for WWW users. We believe that these sites
set the initial standard for agribusiness information sites on the
Internet. Today, the sites have even more information, including
current/historical market prices and extensive technical documentation
on best extension and production practices. Sites like these ensure
that free agricultural information will continue to be made available
on the WWW.
